Menswear Monday: Hendrix Through The Lens

This year celebrates 70 years of Jimi Hendrix. 70 years of a musician, a style icon and a revolutionary.

His life has been celebrated through a series of events held by the Victoria and Albert Museum, one of which  is a talk with photographer Gered Mankowitz and film director, Joe Boyd. The talk enabled the audience to be transported back to the swinging 60's to the heart of it all in Mason's Yard.

Mason's Yard, home to Mankowitz's studio provided a backdrop for some of the most iconic photos of Hendrix that we see today. Although not recognised as important photos at the time, due to Mankowitz's decision not to shoot in colour, they later became popular thanks to Alan Douglas, who managed Jimi's estate. Douglas contacted Mankowitz in order to source an image for the cover of the album, The Ultimate Experience and since then there has been huge demand for such honest, clean cut images of Hendrix.

Both Boyd and Mankowitz knew the real Hendrix, the man he was off stage. He was quiet, humble and polite, not to mention very unique in his looks. London was fascinated by Hendrix and I don't think we have seen another man like him since. He is an eternal style icon.
